Updating the Flemish portrait with modern disposables...
Since 2007 Suzanne Jongmans has been working on the series 'foam sculptures': caps and collars, inspired by 16th and 17th century paintings, made from packaging and insulation materials. www.suzannejongmans.nl
With the addition of these foam materials, we end up in the 21st century. www.suzannejongmans.nl
Suzanne feels that by using old costumes, photography, foreign materials and plastics she is creating a time crux, a tension of time. As well as referencing consumerism and the rapid circulation of materials. www.suzannejongmans.nl

Lavatory Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style by Nina Katchadourian. "While in the lavatory on a domestic flight in March 2010, I spontaneously put a tissue paper toilet cover seat cover over my head and took a picture in the mirror. The image evoked 15th-century Flemish portraiture. I made several forays to the bathroom from my aisle seat, and by the time we landed (14-hour flight) I had a large group of new photographs entitled Lavatory Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style." ninakatchadourian.com
"I was wearing a thin black scarf that I sometimes hung up on the wall behind me to create the deep black ground that is typical of these portraits. There is no special illumination in use other than the lavatory's own lights and all the images are shot hand-held with a camera phone. Right picture includes a neck pillow. ninakatchadourian.com
